About Me

Hello! I am a first grade teacher at Skillin Elementary School. For the past 20 years, I have been lucky enough to teach children from preschool through fourth grade. Sharing learning and growth in an engaging, fun way is an incredible way to spend my day! First grade is a magical time where children become amazing readers, writers, mathematicians, friends, great thinkers and so much more!

Hi families!

We have a busy week ahead so I wanted to give you a few reminders!

  • Tomorrow, Tuesday, September 27th is picture day.  If you are planning to purchase school pictures please be sure to send in the form and payment tomorrow morning!
  • Book order forms went home last week through email and in folders.  I plan to submit the order on Wednesday.  If you plan to purchase books for your child, please send orders in or complete them online at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs (Class code is GR3YX)
  • Our school's academic open house is Thursday night.  Please drop in to the classroom anytime between 5-6PM  The ice cream social follows from 5:30-7:00PM  Looking forward to seeing you then!
  • I hope to start having volunteers come in by mid-October.  If you have not already let me know about your desire to come in, please do so soon.
  • The first popcorn day was last Friday.  Several students were disappointed to not have popcorn.  If you would like your child to receive popcorn, please send money in ahead of time.  $4.00 will cover the remainder of the year.
We are doing a great job at getting our classroom routines established so we can grow as readers, writers and mathematicians!  We are working on building our read to self stamina and developing our literacy center expectations!

Have a great week!

Class Schedule

Below you will see our typical weekly schedule.  It may change due to special events or needs.

First Week Success!

Hello!

Out first week as a class was a wonderful success!  The children worked really hard at making new friends, learning about our classroom expectations, and developing routines.  We began exploring tools and materials in our classroom too.  As we all began getting to know one another, we talked about the importance of cooperation.  It will be an important concept as we spend our year together!

A few important notes:

  • Our updated specials schedule is listed to the right.  Library books need to be returned on Thursdays!
  • I am trying to reach all families within the first 2 weeks of school by phone.  I want to check in on how everyone is doing and to answer any questions you may have.  Feel free to reach out to me via email, a phone call to the school or a note.
  • Please try to return your child's green communication folder every day, even when there is nothing inside of it!  We are trying to establish a routine.  Thank you!
  • Red totes should be returned to school by Tuesday of each week.
  • Reminder to please subscribe to the blog via email so you don't miss any important information!
Thank you for all you have done to help us get started off with such positivity and happiness!  I am so lucky to spend time with your amazing children!

First Day Information

The first day of school is always a very exciting day for students, teachers and parents.  I am so happy to be a part of that!  It is also a time to get a lot of information! So, here it goes:
  • Daily Communication Folders – These folders will come home with your child every day.  Please help your child to establish the routine of emptying out his or her folder each night and sharing any papers with an adult at home.  Also, please send any notes for me or the office in this folder.  This is the best place to send notes regarding pick-up/dismissal because I cannot guarantee that I have a chance to check my email each day.  If you do not check your email please let me know so I can send home paper copies or class information.
  • Red Totes – Each Wednesday, a red tote will come home with important school information.  Please send the emptied red tote home the following day so it can be refilled and returned to you the following week.
  • Student Work - Throughout the week, students place their daily work into their classroom bins.  Each Friday, or at least almost every Friday, we empty out our bins and bring our work home to share with our families.
  • Snack – We will have snack each day around 10:00.  Please keep it to a drink and 1-2 simple, healthy items (ex. fruit, yogurt, crackers, cut up veggies, etc)  When children arrive each morning, I will ask them to put their snacks in our snack basket.  Please have your child’s snack separate from their lunch.  I have provided a snack bag, generously donated by Subway, for you to use.
  • Volunteers – I am always thankful to have volunteers in the classroom.  I am still working out the details of our schedule and will let you know when it has been finalized!  We are usually ready to have volunteers come in at the beginning of October.  You will need to complete the volunteer training before you can come in to the classroom or chaperone any field trips.  There will be more information about that soon.
  • Forms – Included in the folder today are many forms for you to complete.  Please return them to me by the end of this week.

I am certain that there are other things I am forgetting but, this is a great place to start!
Looking forward to a fantastic year in first grade with you and your kiddos!

Fondly,
Karen Robbie

Welcome to the 2016-2017 School Year!

Hello and welcome to a brand new school year!!  I am so excited about meeting all the kids and families headed my way!  This has been a fantastic summer and I hope you have all had lots of fun...maybe even done some reading on a beach!

I plan on using this blog as a primary means of communicating information to families this year.  I will send email notices out when I put information on here but, it would also be beneficial for you to subscribe to the blog so you don't miss anything important (see box on the left)!

Things are starting to buzz!  The classroom is getting ready!

Here are a few details I would like you to be aware of:
  • Our specials and lunch/recess schedule is now posted on the right side of the blog.
  • Each day your child will check in with me and tell me if they are buying a lunch or a lunch milk.  Please make sure your kiddo knows when they come to school each day!
  • If you have not already done so, I highly recommend setting up a MySchoolbucks account so you can provide cafeteria payments online.  Information can be found here.
  • Please send your child with a drink and a healthy snack daily.  When students arrive in the morning, I will ask them to put their snack in one spot and their lunch box in another.  It allows more time for learning!  I will provide you with a snack sack on the first day of school.
  • If possible, students are asked to bring in a white 1" binder with 10-15 sheet protectors and earbuds or headphones to be used in the classroom.
  • Please send in a set of extra clothes for your child in a labeled ziploc bag.
  • If you would like to contribute other helpful items to our classroom, please see our wish list on the left hand side.

I'm sure there will be more information for you before school begins on Tuesday, September 6th!  Stay tuned!

Cheers!

See you soon!!!
